Apple invents natural tap-based gesture input for nudging onscreen objects, selecting text

Apple invents natural tap-based gesture input for nudging onscreen objects, selecting text: "a user is able to move an onscreen object left or right with extreme precision, perhaps nudged a pixel at a time, by lightly tapping on the side of an iPhone. Tap gestures on non-touchscreen portions of a device are picked up by an accelerometer or gyroscope and processed naturally, meaning inputs are represented onscreen in an equal and opposite direction. For example, a light tap on the right side of an iPhone would move an object to the left, while a tap on the left would send the object to the right."

ATAP’s ‘Soli’ Radar-Based Gesture Control Could Be The Perfect Wearable Interface | TechCrunch

ATAP’s ‘Soli’ Radar-Based Gesture Control Could Be The Perfect Wearable Interface | TechCrunch:

Google’s ATAP Project Soli is an attempt to harness the power of hand and finger manipulation to make it easier to interact with ever-smaller devices and screens. It posits that instead of using tools, we should use our “hand motion vocabulary” to control devices, even when the devices aren’t present.

Apple Patents Learning Computer Vision For Gesture Control | TechCrunch

TechCrunch Reports:

Apple has a new patent (via AppleInsider) for 3D gesture control, specifically describing the tech used to help a computer identify hand motions made by a user. The patent goes into detail about how the system can not only recognize gestures, but learn them so well that it can even spot them when part of the hand making the gesture is blocked or not visible by the camera, leading to greater accuracy overall.

BMW Shows Off Gesture Controls And Automated Parking | TechCrunch

Another car manufacturer is looking at gesture controls:

BMW Shows Off Gesture Controls And Automated Parking | TechCrunch: "BMW is showing off a bunch of new or new-ish technologies this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. On the just-announced side, there are in-development gesture-based controls — so, thanks to an in-car camera, you may soon be able to draw circles in the air to adjust the volume of your music, or point in a certain way to answer a phone call."

VW Debuts The Golf R Touch With All-Touchscreen User Interface, Gesture Control | TechCrunch

VW Debuts The Golf R Touch With All-Touchscreen User Interface, Gesture Control | TechCrunch: "VW built two interesting additional innovations into this car. Hold up your open hand for two seconds and a Kinect like gesture control pops up (including a ghost image of your hand) that lets you control all of the car’s features without even touching a screen. And using VW’s multi-touch sliders, you can put one to three fingers on the screen and, depending on how many fingers you’re using, you can control the radio’s volume or set the ambient light (this looks to be a pretty customizable feature). All of this comes with haptic feedback, too."
